Taiwan paid tribute to its Olympic athletes, including gold medal-winning boxer Lin Yu Ting, on Tuesday by deploying F-16 fighter jets to protect flights arriving in Taipei.
The Ministry of National Security said that at least three F-16 jets were used to thank the athletes who made the country proud by winning a total of seven medals, including two gold and five bronze, for the country. Taiwanese athletes were traveling on the EVA Air Charter Final while returning from Paris on Tuesday morning. Photos released by the Ministry of Defense showed three F-16 fighter jets flying over Taoyuan International Airport for a special honor for the athletes. The jets took off from the airbase at 5:00 am and joined the EVA flight mid-air. Waves of fire were also released in the sky to welcome the winners. The plane carrying the players landed in Taipei at 7:10 am.
