Gurmeet Singh gets bail: Gurmeet Singh, accused in the murder case of former Chief Minister Beant Singh, has got bail from Chandigarh District Court. Many people including the former Chief Minister were killed in a bomb blast in the Punjab Civil Secretariat complex on 31 August 1995. Gurmeet's lawyer Ravinder Singh Basi (Jolly) had said in the bail plea that he should be granted bail until a decision is taken on his premature religious petition.
The bail plea filed was based on the contempt judgment of the Punjab and Haryana High Court of January 2023. Along with this, arguments were also presented while presenting the decision given by the High Court in June 2023 in a case of the year 2022. According to advocate Ravinder Singh, Gurmeet Singh will be released from jail on Wednesday as the bail bond process was not completed on Tuesday.
Earlier, Gurmeet had also got parole. However, a non-bailable warrant was also issued against Gurmeet for not surrendering on time, after which he surrendered. Sector-3 police station had registered a case against Gurmeet and others under the Explosive Materials Act, murder, attempt to murder, criminal conspiracy and Explosive Materials Act.
In July 2007, the court convicted Bandi Singh Gurmeet in the Beant Singh murder case and sentenced him to life imprisonment. He has spent more than 31 years in jail. He had also filed a petition in the High Court for premature release. Another accused Shamsher Singh also filed a similar petition. He has been released on parole earlier as well. He is currently in jail.
