Indian wrestler Vinesh Phogat has made it to the finals with a brilliant performance at the Paris Olympics. This time she was expected to win the gold medal. However, she was disqualified before the final match for being only 100 grams overweight.
The International Olympic Committee (IOC) did not even give her extra time to lose weight. Due to this decision, Vinesh not only missed out on winning the gold medal but also the silver medal, after which she appealed for justice in the Court of Arbitration for Sports (CAS). The hearing of her case has been completed and the verdict will be announced by August 13. Before Vinesh, CAS has given justice to Romanian gymnast Ana Barbosu. This has also increased the hopes of the Indian wrestler.
Romanian gymnast gets bronze medal
Jordan Chiles of the United States won the bronze medal in the women's artistic gymnastics floor event at the Paris Olympics with 13.766 points. Romania's Ana Barbosu finished fourth with 13.700 points. Barbosu appealed to CAS against the wrongful awarding of marks to Chiles. After the hearing of the case, CAS has upheld Barbosu's challenge.
The court said the Olympic judging panel had incorrectly added the points, causing Chile to move from fifth to third. Following the decision, Chiles' score was dropped and she was back to 13.666. CAS thus judged in favour of Ana Barbosu and despite losing the final, the International Gymnastics Federation (FIG) has now awarded the Romanian gymnast the bronze medal.
Actually, Jordan Chiles noticed something wrong with the floor during the performance. After this, he complained to the judging panel about the 'degree of difficulty'. The panel agreed with him and gave additional points. Later, Ana Barbosu protested against this. She believed that there was a time limit of 1 minute to lodge a complaint. After the time limit, Chiles raised the issue of 'degree of difficulty', so he should not have been given marks.
Will Vinesh Phogat get the silver medal?
Vinesh Phogat has also filed a petition in CAS regarding disqualification. India's famous lawyer Harish Salve has presented his side on his behalf. In this petition, he has demanded joint silver. If CAS accepts his demand, then silver can be expected. After the hearing, the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) is expecting a decision in its favor. Let us tell you that the CAS decision on the Vinesh case is to come on August 13.
