Ahmedabad: India has exported 2.6 lakh tonnes of onion in the current financial year till July. On behalf of the government, Minister of State for Food and Consumer Affairs BL Verma said in a written reply to a question in the Lok Sabha, 'The government has lifted the ban on onions and allowed export from May 4, 2024. The minimum export price (MEP) is $550 per tonne and 40 per cent export duty
A total of 2.60 lakh tonnes of onion has been exported in the current financial year till July 31, 2024. In the last financial year, India exported 16.07 lakh tonnes of onion. Apart from this, he said that the government has purchased 4.68 lakh tonnes of onion mainly from Maharashtra through various institutions as buffer stock to maintain the price at a reasonable price.
The average monthly Mandi model price of onion in Maharashtra between April and July, 2024 is Rs. 1230 to Rs. 2578 as against Rs. 693 to Rs. 1205 per quintal for the same period last year. The average purchase price of onion for buffer in the current year has increased by 64 percent to Rs. 1724 to Rs. 2833 per quintal.
The government acknowledged that India is a net onion exporter and earns from exports. The net export value earned by India in the last three years in the year 2021-22 is Rs. 3326.99 crores, in 2022-23 Rs. 4525.91 crores and in 2023-24 Rs. 3513.22 crores.
