Cases in the country have increased at a rocket speed. While the number of such cases across the country was only 2,677 in the year 2019-20, the number of such cases increased tenfold to 29,082 in 2023-24.
These serious figures were presented in the Parliament by the government itself. Then a former officer of the cyber cell involved in the investigation of such cases has revealed an interesting fact. According to him, the illegal use of rented bank accounts is the main reason behind the increasing financial fraud in the country. If there are no such accounts, then 99 percent of financial fraud in the country will stop. The surprising thing is that cyber crooks open such accounts very easily and manage such accounts even more easily. By renting the bank accounts of poor and innocent people, fraudsters resort to the art of theft and financial fraud, and the victims are tenants. Such bank accounts are also used by economic criminals to transfer illegally obtained money to various bank accounts. Whenever such financial fraud takes place, the police investigation reaches the tenants of the rented account.
The increasing trickery of cyber criminals and vulnerabilities in the financial system are also one of the factors behind the rise in cyber crime. Jamtara and Mahabaleshwar are notorious for such crime, but investigations have revealed that such illegal activities are also going on in some areas of the southern part of the country. However, the exact names of such sites have not been disclosed by cyber officials.
