Ujjain: Doors of Nagchandreshwar temple opened at midnight, darshan started after Trikal Puja

Ujjain, August 9 (HS). On the occasion of Nag Panchami, the doors of Nagchandreshwar temple situated on the peak of the world famous Jyotirlinga Lord Mahakaleshwar temple were opened at 12 o'clock on Thursday night. After the doors were opened, Mahant Vineet Giriji Maharaj of Shri Panchayati Mahanirvani Akhara and President of Mahakaleshwar Temple Management Committee and Ujjain Collector Neeraj Kumar Singh started the Trikal Puja. After the Trikal Puja, the process of darshan started here, which will continue till 12 o'clock on Friday night.

Actually, the doors of Nagchandreshwar temple open only once a year for 24 hours on Nag Panchami festival. After the doors of the temple opened at 12 midnight on Thursday, Trikal Puja went on for about an hour and then after offering Bhog, common people were allowed to enter the temple for darshan. Crowds of devotees started gathering from Thursday evening itself for darshan in Lord Nagchandreshwar temple. Devotees will be able to have darshan here for 24 hours i.e. till 12 midnight on 9th August. During this time, about 10 lakh devotees are expected to come to Mahakal temple.

On Friday at 12 noon, worship will be done by Shri Panchayati Mahanirvani Akhara. On the same day, after the evening aarti of Mahakaleshwar, the temple priests and purohits will perform the worship on behalf of Shri Mahakaleshwar Temple Management Committee. Lord Nagchandreshwar will be offered dal-bati on Friday afternoon. According to the Panchang date, there is a tradition of opening the doors of the temple on the fifth day of Shukla Paksha of Shravan month. It is believed that after visiting the Nagchandreshwar Mahadev temple on Nag Panchami, a person becomes free from all types of snake defects. Therefore, there is a long queue of devotees to visit this temple which opens on the day of Nagpanchami.

Nagchandreshwar temple is very ancient. It is mentioned in history that Raja Bhoj of Parmar dynasty built this temple around 1050 AD. After this, Maharaj Ranoji Scindia of the then Scindia family renovated the Mahakal temple in 1732. At that time, the peak of this temple was also renovated. Even today, Trikal Puja is performed here on the day of Nag Panchami. Puja is performed by the priests on behalf of Tehsil Puja and Mahakal Temple Management Committee. Panchayati Mahanirvani Akhara has the right to worship when the doors open here. A part of the offerings that come, belongs to the Mahakal Temple Management Committee, the rest of the offerings go to the Akhara.
