New Delhi: In view of the uncontrolled riots in Bangladesh, India has withdrawn non-diplomatic staff from its embassies and kept only 20 to 30 diplomatic staff in Dhaka and other places. Other staff members and their families have been called back to India. A total of 190 non-essential employees have been sent back. Their family members have also been called back. Only senior diplomats will remain in Bangladesh. Currently, about 10,000 Indians live in Bangladesh.
About 190 non-essential employees have been brought back along with their families by Air India's special flight Chai 1128. At present, India has a High Commission in Dhaka. Apart from this, there are consulates in Chittagong, Khulna and Silhar. Only 20 to 30 senior officials are kept in each of these.
Meanwhile, Bangladesh's ousted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, who had left Bangladesh and come to India, wanted to take refuge in a European country. First she chose England. But their foreign ministry said 'no' to her citing some international law or the other. Other European countries also said the same, as a result, now Sheikh Hasina has no choice but to stay in India. As a result, the Indian government has started making arrangements for her sister and her sister's family members to stay in India in a systematic manner. Sheikh Hasina's sons are currently abroad (in the US). Arrangements are being made for them too if they come to India.
On the other hand, the question of how to work with the 'new government' of Bangladesh has become complicated. It is likely that India has a nominal relationship with it. Along with this, the Border Security Force (BSF) has been asked to remain extremely vigilant on the 4000 km long border of the two countries so that the unrest in Bangladesh does not affect India.
