IMD Rainfall Alert: Monsoon has once again showered its blessings on North India. Heavy rains are falling in the capital Delhi, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Jammu and Kashmir, Punjab and Haryana. The Meteorological Department has predicted that the rain will continue for the next five days. Many areas of Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat and Maharashtra may receive heavy rains on August 5. At least 87 routes have been blocked due to heavy rains and cloudburst in Himachal Pradesh. The number of landslides has increased in the last five days.

Devastation in Himachal and Uttarakhand

An alert of moderate rain with thunderstorms has been issued in Himachal Pradesh till August 8. The death toll in last week's landslide in Himachal Pradesh has risen to 221 and 13 respectively, while more than 370 people, including pilgrims stranded on the footpath of Kedarnath Yatra in Uttarakhand, have been rescued safely. More than 10,000 people have been rescued so far from Kedarnath, Bhimbali and Gaurikund. The footpath of Kedarnath Yatra was badly damaged due to cloudburst in Junglechatti near Lincholi last Wednesday.

Army personnel have been deployed in waterlogged residential areas in Pune, Maharashtra, amid heavy rains and release of water from the Khadakvasla dam. Officials said that in view of the release of water from Khadakvasla, Mulshi, Pawna and other dams in the Pune region, Chief Minister Eknath Shinde has asked officials to remain alert. Apart from this, it has also been instructed that steps should be taken to evacuate people from dangerous areas to safe places with the help of National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) and Army if needed. Irrigation department officials said that 35,000 cusecs (cubic feet per second) of water was released from the Khadakvasla dam in Pune district on Sunday following heavy rains in the catchment areas in the last fortnight.

Trouble increased due to heavy rain in Jammu and Kashmir

Some buildings were damaged in Jammu and Kashmir, while flash floods triggered by a cloudburst in Ganderbal district led to the closure of the Srinagar-Leh national highway. The closure of the highway has cut off Kashmir Valley's connectivity with Ladakh, while the Baltal base camp for the Amarnath Yatra has also been affected. Heavy rains in Jharkhand have caused some rivers in the state to overflow, prompting the East Singhbhum district administration to issue an alert for people living in low-lying areas. The water level of the Kharkai and Swarnarekha rivers has been rising for the past few days due to continuous rains in the state. According to an official release, the water level of the Swarnarekha river was 116.58 metres at 9 am on Sunday, while the danger mark is 121.50 metres. Flood-like conditions have also arisen in Valsad, Gujarat.
