On Tuesday night, i.e. 29th July, a wave of devastation hit Wayanad in Kerala and many families were devastated. Today it has been 8 days since this accident. 180 people are still missing. In the rescue operation that lasted for a week, 387 bodies were recovered, out of which 180 have not been identified yet. After the accident, there was only one question in everyone's mind that what is the reason behind this? Union Environment Minister Bhupendra Yadav has broken his silence on this.

Environment Minister enumerated the reasons

The Environment Minister says that illegal mining, uncontrolled construction and increasing commercial activities could be the main reasons behind this disaster. The 4-lane road tunnel got the green signal from the Center last year. After that the central government did not allow any kind of development work in Wayanad. The purpose of this tunnel was to connect Kozhikode and Wayanad. However, work on this project has not started yet.

According to Union Minister Bhupendra Yadav, the topography and landforms should be examined to approve any project. For the last 10 years, the state government has promoted development work without paying attention to these issues. This is why everything got destroyed due to heavy rains and this terrible tragedy was witnessed.

Permission for mining 3 mines in 3 years

According to environmental officials, in the last three years, the Kerala government has approved mining of three mines, including a granite mine. Two consecutive landslides occurred in Wayanad on July 30 after three days of torrential rain, killing several people.

The committee's report was ignored

The Gadgil Committee and Kasturirangan Committee constituted by the Central Government had declared many areas of the Western Ghats unsafe. However, the recommendations of the committee also got caught in the cycle of development and the result is before everyone in the form of Kerala landslides.
