A coup took place in Bangladesh on Monday amid anti-reservation protests and violent clashes. Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina resigned and left the capital Dhaka. After the resignation of Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, the command of the country is now in the hands of the army. The Bangladesh Army had given a 45-minute ultimatum to Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to resign from her post. Hundreds of protesters entered her residence. After Sheikh Hasina's resignation, Bangladesh Army Chief General Waqar-uz-Zaman held a press conference. He said that we will fulfill your demands. We will bring back peace in the country. We will run this country through an interim government.” General Waqar-uz-Zaman told the protesters, “Avoid vandalism, arson and violence. If you people join us, the situation will improve. Nothing will be achieved through fighting and violence. Stay away from disputes and anarchy.”
Meanwhile, the government has shut down mobile internet and imposed a nationwide curfew to control the violence. A three-day holiday has been declared for schools, colleges and markets. In view of the violence, the operation of many trains has been stopped till further orders. Textile factories have also been locked down. The police have asked people to stay at home as much as possible.
According to reports received from Dhaka, at least 90 people including 14 policemen were killed in fierce clashes between security forces and anti-government protesters in different parts of Bangladesh on Sunday. The protesters were demanding the resignation of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
