Bangladesh Protest Updates: Bangladesh is once again burning in the fire of violence. An estimated 91 people have been killed in police firing and clashes during violent demonstrations demanding the resignation of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. Police fired tear gas shells and rubber bullets to disperse the protesters. Never before in the history of Bangladesh has such a large number of people died in a single day. Earlier on July 19, 67 people were killed in a student demonstration demanding the abolition of reservation in government jobs.
The Bangladesh government announced an indefinite curfew in the country from 6 pm on Sunday. This is the first time the government has taken such a step during the ongoing protests that began last month. Along with this, a three-day general holiday has also been declared from Monday. Curfew has been imposed in Bangladesh and internet services have been shut down.
According to India's advisory, 'All Indian citizens present in Bangladesh have been advised to exercise extreme caution, limit their movements and remain in touch with the Indian High Commission in Dhaka at all times. Citizens have been asked not to travel to Bangladesh until further notice.
This is the biggest challenge so far for the Hasina government, which has been in power for the last 20 years. Hasina became the Prime Minister for the fourth consecutive time but the Bangladesh Nationalist Party boycotted the elections. Human rights organizations and critics have accused the Hasina government of using excessive force against the protesters. However, Hasina and her ministers are denying this allegation.
On Sunday, students and protesters demonstrated demanding the resignation of the government. They blocked several major highways. Since then, violence has spread across the country. After a meeting of the National Security Committee with the heads of the Army, Navy, Air Force, Police and other agencies, Hasina said, 'Those who commit violence are not students but terrorists who want to destabilize the country. I appeal to the countrymen to crush these terrorists strictly.'
