Crime News: Former AIG of Punjab Police shot dead his son-in-law, an Indian Revenue Service (IRS) officer, in Chandigarh District Court on Saturday. The deceased has been identified as Harpreet Singh. Harpreet Singh was facing a divorce case from his wife. He had come to the court for the hearing of this case. The police have arrested the accused father-in-law.
According to the police, Harpreet Singh was an officer in the Agriculture Department. He was married to Dr. Amitoj Kaur a few years ago. At present, Amitoj Kaur is living in Canada. She had filed a divorce case in the year 2023. Being abroad, Amitoj Kaur had given power of attorney to her father Malvinder Singh Sidhu for appearance. About 5 months ago, the court had transferred the case to the mediation center. Peace talks were held twice between the two parties. On Saturday, both the parties reached the third round of talks.
Meanwhile, the girl's father, former AIG of Punjab Police Malvinder Singh Sidhu, said that he had to go to the bathroom. He brought his son-in-law Harpreet out of the mediation center on the pretext of asking for directions. As soon as he came out, the father-in-law fired about 5 rounds. Two bullets hit Harpreet Singh. The people around took care of Harpreet. After this, the family immediately took him to the hospital. Harpreet Singh died during treatment there.
Chandigarh SSP Kanwardeep Kaur said that today at 2 pm, the police control room received information about firing in the court. The police reached the spot and arrested the accused from there. A weapon, a 32 bore pistol, has been recovered from him. It is being investigated from which gate the accused entered the court with the pistol. There are no CCTV cameras installed at the mediation center. Some people have also videographed the spot. Their statements are being recorded. 4 shells have been recovered from the spot, while 3 live cartridges have been recovered.
Former AIG Malvinder Singh Sidhu has had a long history of controversies. In October 2023, the Punjab Vigilance Bureau registered a case against Malvinder Singh Sidhu and his two associates on charges of extortion, fraud and bribery. According to the Vigilance Bureau, the then AIG (Human Rights) along with his associates used to blackmail government employees by filing illegal complaints against them. He was also accused of misusing a government vehicle. He got an Ertiga car. In which he used to go and investigate people as AIG of Punjab Vigilance. Whereas during that time he never worked in the Vigilance Bureau.
