Dhaka, March 01 (HS). At least 44 people died and more were injured in a fire that broke out in Bangladesh's capital Dhaka late Thursday night. The condition of many of them is critical. The number of deaths is expected to increase. The burnt people were rushed to Dhaka Medical College Hospital. Health Minister Samant Lal Sen has visited the hospital.
According to Bangladesh's leading newspaper Dhaka Tribune, the fire broke out in a seven-storey commercial building located on Bailey Road in the capital Dhaka. Six restaurants, an outlet of gadget, gear and electronics brand Samsung, a clothing showroom named Aileen etc. were reduced to ashes in this fire. According to eyewitnesses, the fire started from the first floor and the flames quickly engulfed all the floors.
Health Minister Dr. Samant Lal Sen, Dhaka-8 MP AFM Bahauddin Naseem and senior officials visited the spot. Health Minister Sen told the media at 2 am that 33 bodies have been kept at Dhaka Medical College Hospital. 10 others died at the Sheikh Hasina National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery. A burnt person died in the Central Police Hospital. He said that the death toll is likely to increase. The fire department said most of the people died either by jumping from the building or by burning or suffocation. The fire was brought under control at around 12:30 in the night. During this period, more than 70 people trapped in the building were rescued.
