SOP finalised for oxygen plants in hospitals

Jaipur, August 3 (HS). Rajasthan Medical Services Corporation has prepared a standard operating procedure (SOP) for the smooth operation and use of oxygen production plants installed in various hospitals. This SOP was finalized in a high-level meeting held in the Health Building under the chairmanship of RMSCL Managing Director Neha Giri. The implementation of this SOP will ensure better operation of oxygen plants installed in the hospitals of the state as per the prescribed standards.

Additional Chief Secretary of Medical and Health Department, Shubhra Singh had given instructions regarding the availability and effective management of medical oxygen resources in the state. She had expressed the need to develop a standard operating procedure (SOP) for the effective operation of oxygen plants installed in hospitals. RMSCL has finalized this SOP by organizing a meeting with subject experts, industry experts, and various hospital representatives. It will soon be implemented in the state. State Nodal Officer (Oxygen Management), Dr. Prem Singh gave information about the points included in the draft SOP.

Neha Giri said in the meeting that the plants should also include oxygen purity alarms along with pressure alarms. She also emphasized on setting the frequency of oxygen purity testing through NABL accredited labs. She said that a checklist has been included in the SOP for hospitals to tell when and at what level action is required if any problem arises in the plants. She also emphasized the need for appointment and training of oxygen operations and BME for optimal use of oxygen resources.

Additional Director Hospital Administration Dr. Sushil Parmar gave suggestions on making the SOP user-friendly for technical and plant operators and on fire safety issues.

Jayendra Kasar of Path International gave information about oxygen management during Covid. He told how effectively plants have been used for medical oxygen in big hospitals. SMS Hospital Deputy Superintendent Dr. Sanjay Singh told about the current status of the plants and their various requirements. Executive Engineer Mukesh Kushwaha, Dr. Sandeep Kothari, and industry experts Naveen Sharma and Diksha Gosain also gave their suggestions regarding SOP.

It is noteworthy that Rajasthan is self-sufficient in the supply of medical oxygen requirements. More than 530 plants and more than 40 thousand oxygen concentrators are available in various medical institutions in the state. Apart from this, liquid medical oxygen storage tanks have also been installed.
