Wellington, March 1 (Hindustan Reporter) Australia reached a strong position on the second day of the first Test being played at the Basin Reserve here, thanks to a 116-run partnership for the last wicket between Cameron Green and Josh Hazlewood.
Australia's first innings eventually ended at 383 runs with Hazlewood out just before lunch on the second day. There was a record partnership of 116 runs between Green and Hazlewood, with this both of them have left behind the previous highest partnership of 114 runs for the last wicket against New Zealand. Earlier in 2004, Glenn McGrath and Jason Gillespie had added 114 runs for the last wicket at Gabba. Green remained unbeaten on 174, while Hazlewood scored 22 runs.
The last time Australia had such a partnership for the 10th wicket in an innings was against the West Indies in 2015 when Adam Voges and Hazlewood added 97 runs at Roseau.
In the match, New Zealand won the toss and decided to field first. Team Steve Smith and Usman Khawaja got off to a good start and added 61 runs for the first wicket. Matt Henry broke this partnership by dismissing Smith. Smith scored 31 runs. After this, Australia lost the wickets of Marnus Labuschagne (01), Usman Khawaja (33), and Travis Head (01) till the score of 89 runs.
From here Mitchell Marsh and Green added 67 runs for the fifth wicket and Australia crossed 150 runs. On a total score of 156, Marsh became the victim of Matt Henry after scoring 40 runs. Alex Carey became the victim of Scott Kuggeleijn after scoring 10 runs and the total score was 176. After this, Green first made small partnerships with Mitchell Starc (09) and then captain Pat Cummins (16) and took the team's score to 248. After the dismissal of Nathan Lyon (05) on the score of 267, Green and Hazlewood added a record 116 runs for the last wicket, taking Australia's score to 383 runs. Matt Henry ended this partnership by dismissing Hazlewood. Hazlewood scored 22 runs, while Green remained unbeaten on 174.
For New Zealand, Matt Henry took 5 wickets, Scott Kuggeleijn and William O'Rourke took 2 wickets each and Rachin Ravindra took 1 wicket.
