Gandhinagar, 2 August (HS). Gujarat Police has made an innovative effort to solve the problems of thousands of middle class people who have become victims of cyber crime. Due to the cooperation of the victims in the investigation of cyber crime, 28 thousand bank accounts which were previously locked have now been unfrozen. The unfreezing of bank accounts has brought great relief to the victims.

In this regard, the state's Home Minister Harsh Sanghvi said that Gujarat Police has unfrozen 28 thousand bank accounts through effective investigation of cyber crime. These people were victims of fraud by accepting payment due to betrayal or were unknowingly trapped in fraud. Regarding the frozen amount and refund, the Minister of State for Home said that a big difference has been seen between the refund amount and the amount on hold i.e. the frozen amount.

Giving information about protecting innocent citizens from financial loss due to cyber crime, Sanghvi said that as a result of the efforts of our government, there is a huge difference between the refund amount and the freeze amount. The percentage of refund amount in the year 2024 is 46.42, which was only 17.93 in the year 2023. At the same time, the total amount frozen till June 30, 2024 is Rs 114.90 crore and the refund amount for the year 2024 is Rs 53.34 crore. This difference between the two years shows that the state government is ensuring that the victims of cyber crime get timely relief.

New policy will provide relief

He said the police have also revised their account freezing policy. The new policy is based on maintaining a balance between effective crime prevention and reducing the financial burden on innocent parties. The authority will now freeze only the specific amount related to the fraud instead of the entire account. He said the aim of this change is to reduce the financial burden on innocent victims of cyber crime, who face great difficulties due to the entire bank account being locked.

The Minister of State for Home said, “Due to cyber crime, our middle class citizens had to bear a lot of financial burden and they were not able to withdraw their money from their own account due to their account being frozen. But, now they have felt relieved as their accounts have been unfrozen. These efforts of ours are a relief measure for all those citizens who use bank accounts mostly for transactions in daily life.”

The authority has urged those who feel that their bank accounts have been frozen by mistake to come forward with evidence of their non-involvement in cybercrime. These accounts will be reviewed and those accounts which are eligible to be unfrozen will be unfrozen.
