Amritpal Singh NSA: The Punjab and Haryana High Court on Wednesday heard a petition challenging the extension of the detention period of independent MP from Khadoor Sahib Amritpal Singh, lodged in Dibrugarh jail in Assam under the National Security Act (NSA).

During this process, the High Court has issued notice to the Central Government and Punjab Government and sought their reply. The bench of Chief Justice Sheel Nagu and Justice Anil Khetrapal said that the Central and Punjab Government should tell on what basis Amritpal is in jail and present the evidence before us.

The hearing of the case is scheduled for August 28. During the hearing, the court asked Amritpal's lawyer whether any legal procedure was ignored in the decision to extend the detention period. The lawyer said that the decision to extend the detention period was taken only on the basis of social media posts.

Amritpal Singh is currently lodged in Dibrugarh jail in Assam. The petition filed in the court states that extending the period of NSA by one year is completely wrong. He has termed the action taken against him as unconstitutional. He said that he has been away from his state, relatives and people for more than a year. The petition states that his life and freedom have been taken away in an unusual and cruel manner.
