Kerala Landslide: The death toll due to the landslide following heavy rains in Wayanad, Kerala has reached 243. 130 people are in hospital, while more than 240 people are still missing.
Landslides occurred in Mundakai, Churalmala, Attamala and Noolpuzha villages around 2 am and 4 am on Monday. Houses, bridges, roads and vehicles were washed away.
Teams of Army, Air Force, NDRF, SDRF, Police and Dog Squad are engaged in rescue operations. By late night, 1 thousand people were rescued and 3 thousand people were sent to relief camps.
Apart from Wayanad, the Meteorological Department has issued an alert of heavy rain in Malpuram, Kozhikode, Kannur and Kasargod districts. Due to this, there may be difficulties in rescue work today.
Home Minister Amit Shah said in Parliament on Wednesday that the Kerala government was alert on 23-24 July itself, if the government had evacuated people on time, so much damage would not have happened.
After the devastating disaster on Tuesday, Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan has announced two days of mourning in the state. There will be official mourning in the state on Tuesday and Wednesday. On the request of Chief Minister Vijayan, the Navy has decided to send a crossing team to rescue people in Wayanad.
The Army and the Air Force are already engaged in rescue operations. These people are helping the NDRF and SDRF. However, due to rain, the Air Force helicopters are not able to carry out rescue operations.
