Reduction in electricity bill: The central government is now going to implement a new rule to fix the electricity bill in the country. The government has changed two systems of existing electricity rates. The government is going to implement the 'Time of Day' (TOD) rule to fix electricity rates. After the implementation of this rule, consumers can save 20 percent in their electricity bill by managing electricity consumption during the day. Under the TOD rule, electricity rates will be different for different times of the day.

Tariff will be reduced during the day

Under the new rule, the tariff during solar hours (daytime) will be 10-20 percent lower than normal. At the same time, the tariff will be 10-20 percent higher during peak hours. Union Power and Energy Minister RK Singh believes that this new rule will benefit consumers in every situation. With the implementation of the TOD system, consumers will be able to avoid doing high power consumption tasks like washing clothes and cooking during peak power hours.

When will the new tariffs come into effect?

According to the official release, TOD tariff has come into effect from April for commercial and industrial consumers with maximum demand of 10 kW and above. After this, the TOD system will be applicable for all other consumers except agricultural consumers from April 1, 2025. However, this system will be applicable for customers with smart meters only when they get such meters installed.

Charges for different periods of time

Instead of paying electricity bill at a single rate throughout the day, consumers will pay different charges for electricity at different times of the day. In this way they will be able to easily save electricity bills by managing their electricity consumption. Apart from this, the central government has also simplified the rules for smart electricity meters. In this, the existing penalty for increasing the consumer demand beyond the maximum approved load has been provided to avoid inconvenience and harassment of consumers.

Consumers can take advantage

Union Power Minister RK Singh said that TOD is a win-win deal for the power system as well as consumers. It includes different tariffs for peak hours, solar hours and normal hours. Consumers can reduce their electricity bills by being aware of the TOD tariff and using it effectively.
