Canada Study Visa: Due to rising unemployment in Canada and strict student visa rules in Australia, the craze of studying and earning money abroad has reduced among the youth of Punjab. Till last year, the youth used to start preparing for the visa even before passing 12th, but now these same students are taking admission in graduation in their own state.
Other countries have also increased restrictions ranging from guarantee amount, IELTS band to not inviting family and spouse. In such a situation, 1.5 to 2 times more students are coming for admission in universities and colleges of Punjab as compared to last year. Considering the number of students, universities will have to increase the number of seats.
Guru Nanak Dev University, Amritsar's Registrar KS Kahlon said that last time 10 thousand applications were received for 5800 seats. This year about 21 thousand students have applied for 6100 seats. Most of them are those who are not thinking of going to Canada or abroad due to the difficult life there.
Admission counselling in-charge Dr. Sandeep Sharma said that 2420 applications have been received for 571 engineering seats. Last year this number was only 800. This year 240 seats of B.Tech were increased to 350, but these too were filled. Now 375 students have been kept on the waiting list.
