While increasing population is a headache for some countries like India, Singapore, like Japan, is also worried about its declining population.
The Singapore government said on Wednesday that the birth rate in the country has come down to less than one percent this year and is 0.97 percent. Which is the lowest level in the history of Singapore.
Indrani Raja, Minister of PM's Office in Singapore, gave this information to the Parliament of Singapore on Wednesday. According to published media reports, the average birth rate in Singapore has also decreased by 2.1 percent and Singapore is currently in the list of countries where the population is declining alarmingly.
South Korea currently has the lowest birth rate in the world at 0.72 percent. Whereas the birth rate in Singapore in 2023 is 0.97 percent. The country's birth rate in 2021 was 1.12 percent. According to the government, in 2023 there were 26500 marriages in the country and only 30500 children were born.
The current situation has brought a double crisis for Singapore. On one hand the population is decreasing and on the other hand the number of elderly people in the country is increasing and after a few years this may affect the country's economy.
Factors such as an increase in divorce rates during the Corona crisis in Singapore, rising costs of child-rearing and difficulties in juggling the dual responsibilities of work and family care are believed to be responsible for the declining population.
The government says that couples have to take care of their children as well as their parents and because of this people are avoiding having more children.
The government has started providing many facilities to the people to have more children, but till now it does not seem to be having any effect.
