Wayanad landslide: A major disaster has occurred in Wayanad, Kerala. Due to heavy rains on Tuesday, a landslide occurred in a hilly area near Meppadi in Wayanad district. Officials fear that hundreds of people may be buried under the debris. So far 19 deaths have been confirmed. Officials said that the dead also include a one-year-old child of a Nepali family living in Thondarnav village. So Mundakkai, Churalmala, Attamala and Nulpuzha villages have been affected by this landslide.
NDRF rescue operations in affected areas
The Kerala State Disaster Management Department said that fire department and NDRF teams have been deployed in the affected areas. Two teams of Kannur Defence Security Corps have also been sent to Wayanad to help in the rescue operation. Apart from this, two helicopters of the Indian Air Force, MI-17 and ALH, have been sent to Sulur.
Announcement of 2-2 lakh compensation
Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke to Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan on this issue and announced compensation to the families of those who lost their lives. PM Modi wrote on Twitter, “I am saddened by the landslide incident in parts of Wayanad. My condolences are with all those who have lost their loved ones and I pray for those injured. Rescue operations are still underway to help the affected people. I have spoken to Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan and given the current situation, I assure all possible help from the Center. Apart from this, the Prime Minister has also announced a compensation of Rs 5 lakh.
Rahul Gandhi spoke to the Chief Minister of Kerala
Former Wayanad MP and Congress leader Rahul Gandhi has expressed his grief by tweeting. He tweeted, 'Deeply saddened by the massive landslide near Mappadi in Wayanad. My heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families who have lost their loved ones. I hope those who are still trapped will be rescued safely soon.' I have spoken to the Chief Minister of Kerala and the District Collector of Wayanad, who have assured me that rescue operations are underway. I have requested them to ensure coordination with all agencies, set up a control room and inform us about any assistance required for relief efforts. I will speak to the Union Ministers and request them to provide all possible assistance to Wayanad. I request all UDF workers to help the administration in rescue and relief operations.
