In response to a question in the Lok Sabha, the Union Minister of State for Labor and Employment informed that more than 29.82 crore unorganized workers have registered on the e-Shram portal as of July 22, 2024. The minister said that the ministry has taken several steps to expedite the registration of unorganized workers on the e-Shram portal and to create awareness.
Shobha Karandlaje said that several registration camps and campaigns are being organized by the Ministry from time to time in coordination with Common Service Centres (CSCs). Social media platforms are also being used to spread awareness among workers for registration on e-SHRAM. She informed the House that the services of State Service Centres (SSKs) and Common Service Centres have been roped in to facilitate assisted registration of unorganized workers. e-SHRAM has also been integrated on the Unified Mobile Application for New Age Administration (UMANG App) to increase access to workers and facilitate registration/update on their mobile itself.
It is noteworthy that the Ministry of Labor and Employment launched the e-Shram portal (eshram.gov.in) on 26 August 2021 to create a comprehensive national database of unorganized workers, which has been verified and linked to Aadhaar. The purpose of the e-Shram portal is to register and assist unorganized workers by providing them Universal Account Number (UAN) and e-Shram card.
