New Delhi, July 29 (HS). The area has been saved from any potential danger by recovering the tanker of Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited (HPCL) which was swept away in the Gangaveli river due to a landslide in Uttara Kannada district of Karnataka and extracting its LPG gas. However, another truck has not been found even after 14 days. Many agencies along with the Indian Navy have been involved in the search for that truck and an employee who were swept away in the river.
Incessant monsoon rains had triggered a landslide at Shirur on Ankola-Kumta road in Uttara Kannada district of Karnataka, 40 km south of Karwar, on July 16. This led to the closure of National Highway 66 between Kumta and Karwar. Meanwhile, a Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited (HPCL) tanker laden with LPG and another truck and some workers were swept away in the Gangaveli river. With the vehicle and the workers missing, the Uttara Kannada district administration had sought assistance from the Indian Navy to locate the HPCL tanker in the area.
On this, two diving teams from the Indian Navy's Karwar base were sent to the site in Shirur with inflatable craft and necessary equipment. The team comprised twelve divers and six hydrographers. In coordination with the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) team, the naval personnel recovered the HPCL LPG tanker by braving the strong currents of the river. The tanker was towed from the river on July 17 to the shore, where HPCL employees vented out the gas, thereby securing the area and avoiding any potential danger.
After this, since July 19, two teams of the Indian Navy have been searching for the missing truck with high-resolution sonar. Strong currents in the river, debris uprooted from the hill and adverse weather conditions have made it difficult to reach the river bed. The missing person has been named Arjun, who was transporting wood for a private company. Several agencies are involved in the search for Arjun and the truck near the landslide area. In this, teams of Indian Navy, NDRF and district administration are conducting a coordinated operation.
