International Whale Shark Day is celebrated all over the world on 30 August every year. Whale shark is a species of slow-moving filter-feeding fish. Whale sharks live in the open waters of the oceans. The temperature of the sea coast of Gujarat is favorable to them, due to which whale sharks come to the coast of Gujarat to lay eggs, hence whale shark is also called the daughter of Gujarat.

It is worth noting that in the year 2000 and before that, many whale sharks were hunted on the coast of Gujarat state. This aquatic creature weighs 10 to 12 tons and is 40 to 50 feet long. If it is not hunted, its life span is up to 100 years. On 11 July 2001, the Ministry of Environment and Forests of the Government of India provided legal protection to the whale shark and banned hunting. It was included in Schedule 1 of the Wildlife Protection Act 1972. There is also a provision of three to seven years of imprisonment and a fine of Rs 10,000 for hunting it.
