Chandigarh, July 28 (HS). Assam Governor Gulab Chand Kataria will now be the Governor of Punjab and Administrator of Chandigarh. He will take charge in place of Banwari Lal Purohit.
Banwari Lal Purohit took charge as the Governor of Punjab on 21 August 2021. Purohit was the Governor of Punjab for a total of 2 years and 332 days. He resigned from his post in February 2024 itself, but the President did not accept his resignation, so he remained on this post. With the appointment of new governors, the President accepted his resignation.
Banwari Lal Purohit has had conflicts with Punjab's Bhagwant Mann government on several issues during his tenure. Governor and Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann have come face to face several times on the issue of convening the assembly session in Punjab. The Punjab government had even passed a resolution in the assembly to take the right to appoint the Vice Chancellor or Deputy Vice Chancellor in the state universities with itself instead of the Governor, which was not constitutional.
Banwari Lal visited the border districts several times during his tenure as Governor and cornered the government on the issue of increasing trend of drug abuse. Two days ago also he had returned from his visit to Amritsar and Tarn Taran districts. Even after this visit, Purohit cornered the government on the issue of drug abuse and universities.
The new Governor Gulab Chand Kataria will also face a big challenge of coordinating with the Punjab government. Not only this, Kataria will also face many challenges as Chandigarh Administrator. At present, there is a Congress MP in Chandigarh and the corporation is dominated by the Aam Aadmi Party and Congress alliance. Due to which there is a dispute on the issue of providing free water and electricity, which the new administrator will have to face as soon as he arrives.
