Kolkata, July 28 (HS). The Border Security Force (BSF) has foiled an infiltration attempt in West Bengal's Nadia district on the India-Bangladesh border (IBB). Officials said on Sunday morning that the incident took place at around 2.40 am on Saturday under the Ranghat border post. After that, an official meeting was held with the Border Guards Bangladesh (BGB) and protest was also expressed in this regard.
AK Arya, deputy inspector general (DID) and spokesperson of BSF, South Bengal Frontier, said that a jawan of the 68th battalion noticed movement across the Kodalia river, which forms a natural border between the two countries. Around 10 Bangladeshis were entering India through a banana plantation. When the jawan challenged them and ordered them to retreat, they proceeded to attack him with sharp-edged weapons. The jawan first hurled a stun grenade, but it could not deter the group. He then fired two rounds at them. Taking advantage of the darkness and dense vegetation, the intruders then fled towards Bangladesh.
He further said that attempts to smuggle drugs in Rangahat and Mamabhagina (Nadia) were also foiled by the troops. He said that Bangladeshi criminals also targeted BSF jawans at several checkpoints in North 24 Parganas, Murshidabad and Malda districts. At some places, the jawans had to use stun grenades and pump action guns.
The DIG said that after the infiltration attempt, a meeting was called with the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) and a strong protest was lodged. Unfortunately, despite several meetings, the BGB does not take any action against the criminals. This inaction encourages them to carry out criminal activities along the border. However, our jawans are alert and will continue to protect the interests of the nation.
