New Delhi, 27 July (HS). Two girl students died on Saturday due to water logging in the basement of an IAS coaching centre in Old Rajendra Nagar, Central Delhi. It is being told that more students are trapped in the basement. At present, the fire department and NDRF team are engaged in rescue work on the spot. Water is being removed from the basement through motor. At the same time, Delhi Government's Revenue Minister Atishi has directed the Chief Secretary to investigate the matter and submit a report within 24 hours.
It is being told that Rao IAS Study Centre's coaching centre in Old Rajendra Nagar suddenly got flooded on Saturday night. This created chaos there. Some students managed to get out of the coaching centre, while many children were trapped inside due to darkness in the basement. As soon as the information about the incident was received, the fire brigade and NDRF team started relief and rescue work and pulled out two bodies late at night. The police took the bodies in their custody and kept them safely in the mortuary of the nearest hospital for post-mortem. Among the dead are two young girls, who have not been identified yet. Rescue operation is going on.
Police says that the library located in the basement of the coaching centre was filled with water due to heavy rain on Saturday evening. As soon as the water filled, there was chaos on the spot. The students present there somehow ran upstairs through the stairs and saved their lives. Meanwhile, four to five students got trapped there. The entire basement was filled with water in no time. Seeing the situation worsening, the police as well as the fire department were immediately informed about the matter. As soon as the news was received, seven fire engines reached the spot. Senior police officers of the district also reached there. Due to darkness in the basement, there was a lot of difficulty in the rescue work. Seeing the situation worsening, the NDRF team was called. Apart from the fire department removing water from the basement with the help of a pump, the NDRF divers entered the basement and started searching for the students. Some students said that only two or three students were trapped below, while some are saying that their number is four to five.
Senior police officers of the district said that Rao IAS Study Centre is located at 11-B on Bada Bazar Road in Old Rajendra Nagar area of Central Delhi. UPSC students are coached here. The coaching centre has arranged a library in the basement for the students to study. Around 35 students were present here on Saturday evening.
Fire officer Atul Garg said that he received information about the incident at around 7.15 pm, after which a total of 5 fire engines reached the spot. We pumped out the water and recovered the bodies of two girls. However, three children were suspected to be trapped there. Two of them have been recovered. As soon as the water recedes, we will find the third one as well. He said that there were 30 students in the basement, out of which three were trapped and the rest escaped safely.
Let us tell you that on Friday, a student died due to electric shock caused by rain in Patel Nagar area. Such deaths of children who have come to study in the capital Delhi are extremely painful and heart-wrenching.
