Kolkata, July 26 (HS). Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee had to go to Delhi on Thursday to attend the meeting of NITI Aayog on Saturday. She suddenly cancelled her visit and did not give any reason for it.
According to sources close to him, he cancelled his Thursday's visit because of the nationwide criticism over his statement regarding giving shelter to people coming from Bangladesh.
After reaching Delhi on Thursday, Mamta Banerjee had to hold a meeting with her party MPs. During this time, she also had to talk to the media in Delhi. Earlier, the Bangladesh government, angry over the statement regarding giving shelter to people coming from Bangladesh, expressed its objection to the Indian government. On Thursday, the Union Ministry of External Affairs was also to issue a statement regarding this in Delhi. Mamta Banerjee came to know about this, so to avoid any kind of controversy, she cancelled her visit on Thursday. It is still not clear whether she will attend the Niti Aayog meeting on Saturday or not.
The Ministry of External Affairs said on Thursday that India has received a diplomatic note from Bangladesh, in which protest has been expressed over the statement of West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. She said that conducting foreign affairs and establishing relations with any other country is the prerogative of the central government only.
This protest from Bangladesh comes a few days after the West Bengal chief minister directed the state administration to provide all possible help and assistance to people returning from violence-hit Bangladesh. Speaking at the July 21 Shaheed Diwas gathering, Mamata Banerjee said her government would provide shelter to violence-affected people from Bangladesh and that we will not refuse anyone if they knock at our door.
