Mumbai: A unique onion bank will be opened in many parts of the state for the benefit of thousands of onion producing farmers of Maharashtra. The onions will be preserved with the help of solar energy so that they do not spoil and last longer.

A meeting was held today under the chairmanship of Chief Minister Eknath Shinde to review the problems of onion producing farmers. On this occasion, Shinde announced that the first onion bank will be started in Rahuri of Ahmednagar district. Soon after this, onion banks will be opened in Nashik, Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar 2 (Aurangabad) and Solapur.

These banks for onion storage will be started in the premises of MIDC (Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation) and Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation. The preserved items will be processed with the help of solar energy so that onions can last longer without spoiling.

Kanda banks will also be opened at 10 locations on the Samruddhi Expressway connecting Mumbai-Nagpur, Shinde said.
