For the last few days, the prices of vegetables in the country have been skyrocketing. The prices of onion, potato and tomato are constantly increasing. The retail price of essential vegetables like tomato, onion and potato has increased from 15 percent to 58 percent in a month. Apart from monsoon, many other important reasons are being considered responsible for the rising prices of vegetables.
However, the central government claimed that this situation is not permanent. Prices will soon come under control in the coming days. But the government also gave the reason for the increase in vegetable prices. In the Economic Survey presented in Parliament, the Central Government has revealed the reasons for the rising prices of vegetables. The government said that during the last two years, agricultural production has been affected due to bad weather, falling reservoir levels and crop damage. That is why the prices of food items are rising rapidly. Bad weather conditions have also affected the production prospects of vegetables and pulses. The report said that bad weather events increased in 2023-24. This caused damage to crops.
responsible for climate change
The Economic Survey states that food prices are rising due to climate change. In addition, disease on region-specific crops has also hampered vegetable production, leading to a rise in tomato prices. While rains in the previous harvesting season, delay in planting, prolonged drought conditions, etc. are responsible for the rise in onion prices.
Adverse weather spoiled the maths of pulses
Lower production due to unfavourable weather during the last two years has affected the pulses crop, especially tur dal, leading to rise in its prices, besides, urad production has also been affected due to slow sowing and weather disturbances in southern states.
