Relations between India and Maldives have soured since China-backed Mohammad Moizzu became the President of Maldives last year. Now India has given another big blow to Maldives. India has made a big cut in the budget given to help Maldives. Whereas its other neighboring country Bhutan has allocated the highest budget.
These steps by India have stopped Muijuni San from following China's tail. Maldives is already facing huge economic losses due to the tendency of boycotting Indian tourists and a sharp decline in the number of tourists from India has caused huge losses to it. In the Union Budget, India has allocated Rs 2,068 crore to Bhutan as a development fund given to its neighbouring countries, while it has announced to give only Rs 400 crore to Maldives. In the budget for 2024-25, India has kept only Rs 400 crore for Maldives.
Aid to Bangladesh was also reduced
India has also reduced the amount of aid given to Bangladesh. In this budget, Rs 120 crore has been allocated for Bangladesh. Last year this amount was Rs 200 crore. The amount given to Mauritius has also been reduced. Rs 370 crore has been allocated for Mauritius this year. Last year it was Rs 460 crore. Rs 250 crore has been allocated for Myanmar's aid. Whereas in the last two financial years, India had given Rs 400 crore to Myanmar. In the budget, Rs 245 crore has been allocated for Sri Lanka, Rs 200 crore for African countries and Rs 200 crore for Afghanistan.
