Nainital, July 25 (HS). The court of District and Sessions Judge Subir Kumar of Nainital district has sentenced a former army husband accused of murdering his wife three years ago in 2021 to life imprisonment after finding him guilty. The special thing was that the mother-in-law and minor daughter of the deceased, who were eyewitnesses to the incident and themselves became victims of the accused's assault, retracted the allegations in the court, but despite this the prosecution was successful in getting the accused punished.
According to the case, on June 18, 2021, the mother of the deceased had lodged a complaint that her daughter Basanti alias Beena was beaten up by her husband Satish Puri, resident of village Okhalkanda Galla Tok, district Nainital, on a daily basis. Satish beat up Beena a lot on the night of June 15. Basanti's mother-in-law Shanti Devi and daughter Priyanka, who were present in the next room, were also eyewitnesses to this incident and hid in a nearby field at night out of fear of Satish. Satish did not even allow any treatment for his wife. Due to this, Basanti died on June 18.
Dr. Chandrashekhar Bhatt of Dr. Sushila Tiwari Government Hospital Haldwani, who conducted the post-mortem of Basanti's body, testified that there were seven serious injuries on Basanti's body. In this case, apart from the deceased's father, uncle as well as the accused's neighbours gave statements against the accused in the court and also told that since the accused had come home after retirement from the army, he used to beat his wife, mother Kamala Devi and daughter Priyanka every day. The court found the accused Satish guilty and ordered him to be sentenced to life imprisonment and a fine of Rs 50,000. Also, in case of non-payment of the fine, he has been sentenced to an additional three years of imprisonment.
