Monsoon has been kind to Maharashtra. Due to heavy rains, life in Mumbai has been affected. Three lakes supplying water to Mumbai are completely filled. BMC said that around 3:50 am on Thursday, water started overflowing from Vihar Lake in Mumbai. Apart from this, due to heavy rains, many residential areas of Pune have been flooded. Holidays have been declared in schools and colleges in many districts of the state including Thane, Palghar and Raigad. It is being told that 4 people have died due to continuous heavy rains in Pune.
In Pune, several areas were flooded due to the overflow of the Kharakvasla dam, forcing people to evacuate. People were trapped in their homes in deep water due to sudden rain on Thursday morning. Waterlogging was also reported in Vishwavantwadi areas located on the banks of the Mula-Mutha river. Locals say that the water level suddenly rose around 3 am on Thursday due to the release of water from Kharakvasla. People say that no alert was issued by the officials of the Water Resources Department and Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC).
Schools have been closed and some transport services have also been disrupted due to heavy rains. There were several incidents of walls collapsing and trees falling, but there were no reports of casualties. The Meteorological Department has warned of heavy rains in Pune city and ghat areas in the next few hours.
Apart from this, Air India has issued an update in view of heavy rains in Mumbai. The tweet said that flights to and from Mumbai may be affected due to heavy rains. Passengers are advised to leave for the airport early as flights may be delayed due to slow traffic and waterlogging.
