After the death of a Toto driver in police custody at Kalyani police station in Nadia district on Wednesday evening, his family members have accused the police of brutally beating the youth. The name of the deceased Toto driver was Tapan Mandal and he was a resident of Natun Palli area of ward number four of Kalyani Municipality.
The relatives of the deceased claim that he died due to excessive beating.
According to the information received, Tapan Mandal left his house on Wednesday morning with his Toto. But when he did not return home after evening, his wife tried to contact him on phone. But his phone was switched off. After some time, Kalyani police station informed Tapan Mandal's house that the police had taken him into custody. The reason given was that he has been taken into custody in connection with the disturbance in Kalyani No. 5 market area.
When Tapan's wife reached the police station, it is alleged that Tapan's health deteriorated at that time.
Tapan's family alleges that Tapan was beaten up brutally in the police station. There were injury marks all over his body. But it is alleged that instead of sending him to the hospital, he was kept in the police station itself. Tapan's wife claimed that if he had received proper treatment, he would not have died.
However, the police have denied the allegations of beating. The police claim that he was rescued in an injured state and when taken to the hospital, the doctors declared him dead. However, Tapan's family is not ready to accept this. However, after this incident, questions are being raised on the police of Kalyani police station.
