Gill's father Daljit Singh was the longest-serving president of the Guru Nanak Gurdwara in Smithwick, Britain's first Sikh pilgrimage site. In 2017, Gill became the first female British-Sikh Member of Parliament. Therefore, people of Punjabi origin are very happy with the appointment of Preet Kaur Gill.
