Mumbai: A total of 28 cases of Zika virus have been reported in Maharashtra this year. Thus, the first case of Zika virus was reported in the state in 2021. Since then, this year has recorded the highest number of cases of this infectious disease.

What is a matter of relief for Mumbai is that not a single case of Zika has been reported in the city.

Health department sources have informed that the worrying thing is that out of the total 28 cases of Zika virus reported in Maharashtra, 24 have been reported in Pune district. This situation is really very worrying. However, not a single case of Zika virus has been reported in a metropolis like Mumbai with a population of 1 crore 20 lakh. The reason for this may be that extensive medical testing may not have been done in Mumbai.

According to medical experts, accurate diagnosis of Zika infectious disease is necessary. Along with this, complete information about this infectious disease is also important.

The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) has requested the Maharashtra government to increase testing for the Zika virus. Individuals who have previously had symptoms like chikungunya and dengue should be tested specifically. The only KEM hospital managed by the Mumbai Municipal Corporation has facilities to conduct medical tests for the Zika virus. However, KEM Hospital did not receive a single sample to test for this infectious disease.

Additional Commissioner of Mumbai Municipal Corporation, Dr. Sudhakar Shinde clarified that due to monsoon rains in Mumbai, infectious diseases and mosquito-borne diseases are spreading in the city. In such a situation, it is not possible to do all kinds of medical tests on every patient. However, if any patient shows symptoms of an infectious disease, we immediately conduct the necessary tests. Along with this, we also provide proper treatment to the patient.

On the other hand, according to sources from the World Health Organization (WHO), if a woman is exposed to the Zika virus during pregnancy, she is at risk of miscarriage and premature birth, as well as the baby's brain structure may also be affected and may not develop properly, its head size is also smaller.

Keeping this in mind, if a pregnant woman is found to have symptoms of Zika virus, she should be medically examined.
