Kolkata: The Supreme Court has cancelled the High Court's order to provide reservation to the families of those killed in the 1971 war in Bangladesh. It is reported that the Supreme Court has given this decision keeping in mind the violence that broke out across the country after the High Court's order to provide reservation. 133 people were killed in the month-long violence. The Supreme Court overturned the decision given by the Bangladesh High Court regarding 'quota'.
In Bangladesh, Sheikh Hasina's government abolished the quota system in 2018. But the High Court ordered its restoration last month. Then widespread violence broke out across the country and especially in Dhaka, in which 133 people died. Amidst the violence, the Supreme Court overturned the lower court's decision and asked the government to proceed with the status quo.
30% reservation was given to the families of freedom fighters who participated in the 1971 Bangladesh Liberation War, which was canceled by the current Sheikh Hasina government. On appeal, the High Court asked to re-implement the reservation. About 56% of the reserved posts in the country were in government or semi-government jobs. Out of which 30 percent were reserved for the families of those who participated in the Liberation War of Bangladesh. 10 percent jobs were reserved for women and natives of backward districts, five percent for tribals and 11 percent for disabled persons. Of these, only 5 percent reserved seats for tribals and 11 percent for disabled persons have been approved by the Supreme Court. With today's decision, all the meetings except that have been declared canceled.
Meanwhile, amid violence in Bangladesh, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee said that in the current situation of violence in Bangladesh, all the victims will be given shelter in Bengal. Addressing a rally in Kolkata, Mamata Banerjee said that according to the United Nations resolution, if large-scale chaos or violence erupts in neighboring countries, then neighboring countries should give shelter, I am saying this keeping this in mind. However, amid this appeal of Mamata Banerjee, central government sources said that the state does not have the right to give shelter to the citizens of any country, so the Mamata Banerjee government cannot take any such decision. Meanwhile, the violence in Bangladesh is affecting trade with India. Trucks carrying goods between the two countries are stuck at the port. However, officials have claimed that all trucks are safe.
