Paris Olympics 2024: An Australian athlete sets an example of how passionate an athlete can be about any sport. This athlete sacrificed his finger to participate in the Paris Olympics 2024. Matt Dawson plays hockey for the Australian team. Dawson has sacrificed his finger to participate in the Paris Olympics.

Hockey player Matt Dawson sacrificed a finger

The 30-year-old hockey player won a silver medal at the Tokyo Games. Dawson faced a difficult decision after suffering a serious injury recently. The ring finger on his right hand was broken, so the team of doctors gave him two options. One was given the option to either let the finger heal naturally or amputate a part of the finger.

Out of these two options, Dawson chose the second option by sacrificing his finger to participate in the Paris Olympics. Because if the finger heals naturally, it will take more time to heal completely and it may not heal during the Olympic period. So Dawson took the drastic step of cutting off part of the finger.

This decision was a challenge for me.

In this regard, Dawson spoke to an Australian media and said, 'I think I had all the information to make a decision. So I have taken this decision thinking not only about playing the Paris Olympics but also about life after that.' So I thought the best option was to cut off a part of the finger. It was a challenge for me.

Coach Colin Bach praised Dawson

Australia coach Colin Bach praised Dawson's commitment to the game and the upcoming Olympics, saying: “This is not something a coach can decide for a player, I have to give Matt full marks for the work he has done. He is obviously really committed to playing in Paris. I probably couldn't have done it, but he did.”

There is not much time left for the Olympics 2024 to begin. This time these games are to be held in Paris, the capital of France, from 26 July to 11 August. In the Tokyo Olympics 2020, the Australian men's field hockey team had to settle for a silver medal against Belgium in the final after a brilliant performance. So this time they are expected to perform better.

It is noteworthy that while many people support this decision, some people have considered this step as extreme.
