NEW DELHI: India's liquefied natural gas (LNG) imports rose 11% to 2,648 mmscm (million standard cubic metres) in June as the country's gas consumption rose 7%, mainly due to a rise in power demand and increased utilisation of gas-fired power capacity, data from the Petroleum Planning and Analysis Cell shows.
The country consumed 5,594 mmscm of natural gas in June, as against 5,224 mmscm in the same period last year. Natural gas consumption grew by 3.7% to 16,707 mmscm in the first quarter of the current financial year 2024-25.
The natural gas import bill last month also witnessed a significant rise of 10% to $1.1 billion as compared to June 2023. LNG imports in the first quarter of the current fiscal grew 6.2% to $3.4 billion as compared to the first quarter of 2014.
Last month, electricity demand rose to around 152.38 billion units, up 9% compared to the same month last fiscal. Heatwaves are being blamed for the rise in temperatures across the country. Demand increased by 13% during April-June compared to the same period of 2023.
Power demand in the northern part of the country rose 22% in June compared to a year ago, as a prolonged heatwave led to additional power consumption for cooling equipment.
