GMERS Medical College: The Gujarat government has given relief news for students wishing to study medicine. It has reduced the MBBS fees in 13 colleges of the state government-run Gujarat Medical Education and Research Society (GMERS). Actually, some time ago the state government had increased the fees, after which students and political parties had protested.
The Gujarat government has decided in a cabinet meeting held in Gandhinagar that the fees of MBBS students pursuing medical studies will be reduced. This decision was taken under the leadership of Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel. State Health Minister Rishikesh Patel said that the government has decided to reduce the fees for 2,100 MBBS seats in 13 GMERS colleges. This is being done to help the students.
The Gujarat government has reduced the MBBS fees. The fee for government seats has come down from Rs 5.5 lakh to Rs 3.75 lakh, i.e. a reduction of 31.8 percent. The fee for management quota seats has come down from Rs 17 lakh to Rs 12 lakh, i.e. a reduction of 29.4 percent. This new fee structure will be applicable from 2024-25.
Last month, the Gujarat government had issued a notification increasing the MBBS fees of GMERS colleges. The annual fee for government quota seats was hiked from Rs 3.3 lakh to Rs 5.5 lakh, while the management quota fee was hiked from Rs 9 lakh to Rs 17 lakh. Following protests by the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) and the threat of agitation by the Gujarat Congress, the government decided to reconsider the fee hike.
