As part of the 'National Leprosy Eradication Campaign' to eradicate leprosy from the society by the year 2027, the District Health Department conducted a 'Leprosy Diagnosis Campaign' in Surat and Tapi districts. In which from June 10 to July 4, Asha workers and male volunteers conducted door-to-door surveillance in every village of both the districts and examined all the members of the house. In which a total of 2,827 suspected patients were found in the district, including 198 in Surat Corporation and 3025 and 2658 in Tapi district.
Under this campaign, a total of 1245 teams including one male volunteer and one ASHA worker were formed in Surat district, 474 in SMC and 800 in Tapi district. These teams conducted surveys to find patients with symptoms of leprosy. In which 206 (83 infectious and 123 non-infectious) leprosy patients from Surat district, 28 (25 infectious and 3 non-infectious) from Surat Corporation and 177 (73 infectious and 104 non-infectious) new patients have been found from Tapi district. And their treatment has been started. These patients also include a total of 26 children from Surat district and 16 from Tapi.
Surat District Leprosy Officer Dr. Jignesh Patel said that treatment of all the identified leprosy patients of Surat and Tapi has been started. This disease can be completely cured, but it requires regular treatment. Infectious leprosy requires one year of treatment and non-infectious leprosy requires 6 months of treatment.
