Hardik Pandya's decision on India's Sri Lanka tour: Shubman Gill led the young Team India on the Zimbabwe tour. There are many questions about who will captain Team India in the T20 format on the Sri Lanka tour. Rohit Sharma has retired from this format. Meanwhile, the BCCI is once again in a dilemma regarding captaincy.
Should team vice-captain Hardik Pandya sit on the hot seat or should Suryakumar Yadav take over the leadership mantle? India will play 3 T20Is against Sri Lanka later this month, which is the first series under new coach and former India opener Gautam Gambhir. After the T20Is, India will also play 3 ODIs.
After playing a key role in India's title win against South Africa in Barbados, Pandya is the right choice to take over Rohit's throne but in the meantime, a big news is coming out about Pandya, the questionable fitness record of this Vadodara player has brought Suryakumar's name to the fore.
According to the report, Pandya has informed the BCCI (Board of Control for Cricket in India) that he will not be part of the ODI team for the Sri Lanka tour due to personal reasons. The Indian team will play three ODIs against Sri Lanka from August 2 to 7.
The report also said that Gambhir has insisted that all senior players Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli and Jasprit Bumrah play the three ODIs against Sri Lanka. The players have not yet responded as Rohit and Kohli are on a foreign trip with their families on a break.
A BCCI source said, Hardik's fitness is an issue, but he has a big role to play in the T20 World Cup 2024. For Suryakumar, we have received feedback from the team that his style of captaincy has been well received by the dressing room.
Suryakumar Yadav underwent surgery
Interestingly, Suryakumar also went for hernia and foot surgery earlier this year and only made a comeback for Mumbai Indians during the March-May IPL. The decision makers within the board felt that Pandya could be the best choice to lead the Indian team. Because he was appointed the vice-captain of the Indian team during the World Cup. In such a situation, Gambhir's vote will also be important as BCCI officials and selectors to decide Rohit's replacement.
