Export of Basmati rice increased: There is good news for farmers. The demand for Indian Basmati rice in foreign countries is continuously increasing. Due to this, the rate of Basmati is likely to increase in the near future. Of course, the Government of India bans the export of other commodities including rice to control the prices of food grains, but the increased demand for Basmati rice in foreign countries in recent times is a good sign for the farmers.
According to data from the Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA), India exported Basmati rice worth $103.7 million in the April-May period of the current financial year 2024-25. This is 13.11 percent more than $91.7 million in the same period of 2023-24. However, exports of agricultural and processed food products declined slightly.
In fact, the restrictions imposed by the government on rice exports to control prices in the domestic market have affected other varieties. This is the reason why the export of non-basmati rice in April-May fell by 13.35 percent year-on-year to $ 919 million. According to the data, during the April-May period of the current financial year, the export of agricultural and processed food products has declined by 0.49 percent year-on-year to US $ 433.7 million. This export figure was $ 435.8 million in the same period of 2023-24.
Decrease in demand for fresh vegetables and fruits
On the other hand, the export of vegetables and fruits has also decreased. During the April-May period of the current financial year, fresh vegetables worth US$ 122 million were exported from India. This figure is 1.08 percent compared to vegetable exports worth US$ 123 million in the same period of 2023-24.
During this period, the export of fresh fruits also declined by 7.86 percent on an annual basis to $205 million. During April-May, the export of fruit and vegetable seeds increased by 10.85 percent to $380 million, from $340 million a year ago.
Demand for dairy products and meat increased
The demand for dairy products increased by 30.23 percent to $ 98 million compared to a year ago. Dairy products worth US $ 7.5 million were exported from the country during the April-May period of 2023-24. Similarly, the export of buffalo, goat, sheep and other animal meat also increased by 7.99 percent to $ 700 million. The export of poultry products declined by 15.32 percent to $ 2.5 million. $ 2.9 million was recovered in April-May of 2023-24.
