London, July 15 (HS). English club Manchester United on Sunday signed Dutch international striker Joshua Zirkzee from Bologna on a five-year deal worth £36.54 million (US$45 million).
Zirkzee, 23, will replace the departure of Anthony Martial, who left Old Trafford at the end of June when his contract expired.
United have reportedly paid a fee slightly higher than Zirkzee's release clause, allowing them to spread the payment over three years to help them meet financial fairness rules.
The forward scored 12 goals in 37 games for the Italian side last season but only appeared twice as a substitute for the Netherlands national team that lost 2-1 to England in the Euro 2024 semi-finals.
“It is a privilege to join such a prestigious club and he is ready to go to another level in his career and win more trophies,” he was quoted as saying by Manchester United's website.
Meanwhile, United sporting director Dan Ashworth said Zirkzee is an “outstanding talent” whose “ability and desire to become a world-class player means he will be a great addition to the squad we are building for an exciting season ahead and beyond.”
