Rates of tomatoes, onions and potatoes: For some time now, the prices of tomatoes, onions and potatoes have brought tears to the eyes of the people. First due to the scorching heat and then due to the rains, the prices of these vegetables were increasing rapidly. Now the government has expressed hope that the situation is improving and soon the prices of these vegetables will start coming down. Supply is also expected to increase from South Indian states. In such a situation, the public will get relief due to the reduction in the prices of tomatoes, onions and potatoes.
According to official figures, the retail price of tomatoes has reached Rs 75 per kg in Delhi, Rs 83 per kg in Mumbai and Rs 80 per kg in Kolkata. Tomato prices were rising due to increased supply. The government says that the prices of tomatoes, potatoes and onions are rising in Delhi and many other cities. According to an official of the Ministry of Consumer Affairs, there were a lot of problems in supply due to severe heat and heavy rains. This could not stop the increase in prices.
Subsidized sales will not resume
According to ministry data, the average retail price of tomatoes on July 12 was Rs 65.21 per kg. Last year, this figure was Rs 53.36 per kg. Tomatoes are coming to Delhi from Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand. Prices will start coming down as soon as hybrid tomatoes arrive from Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka. However, the government will not resume subsidized sale of tomatoes. This measure was implemented last year when the price had reached Rs 110 per kg.
The official said that currently 283 lakh tonnes of potatoes are in storage in the country. Despite less production compared to last year, it can meet the domestic demand. Onion prices have come down in the wholesale markets of Maharashtra. The rates will come down further when the new crop arrives in September. The price of potato in Delhi was Rs 40 per kg. At the same time, the price of onion has gone up to Rs 57 per kg. According to the data, due to the increase in vegetable prices, the retail inflation rate reached a four-month high of 5.08 percent in June.
