What is the billionaire tax?
The billionaire tax in Brazil was originally proposed by French economist Gabriel Zucman. In fact, it is a wealth tax. In this, the government can tax the owners of assets above a certain limit. In ancient times, taxes were collected in this way.
Brazil has proposed that if people's wealth is more than one billion dollars i.e. about 8300 crores rupees, then a two percent tax will be imposed on it annually. This is the billionaire tax. Under this, the government will be able to collect 250 billion dollars i.e. about 20.8 lakh crores rupees every year from about three thousand super rich people of the world.
Congress questioned the government regarding billionaire tax
The opposition Congress in India seems to be supporting it. Party leader Jairam Ramesh tweeted and asked the government to show India's stand on this. The post said that there are 167 people in the country who have assets worth more than one billion dollars. If the government collects two percent wealth tax from these people every year, then the country's treasury will get an income of Rs 1.5 lakh crore, which will be about 0.5 percent of the country's GDP. This will allow investment in schools, hospitals, renewable energy and other needs in the country.
