Austrian Chancellor recalls history

Vienna: Prime Minister Narendra Modi is currently on a visit to Austria, on Wednesday he held talks with Austrian Chancellor Karl Mohammed and discussed strengthening bilateral partnership. Before the meeting, Narendra Modi said that India-Austria friendship is strong and will become stronger in the future.

Modi arrived here on Tuesday evening after a two-day visit to Russia. He is the first Prime Minister to visit Austria after 40 years. Earlier, Indira Gandhi had visited Austria in 1983.

Before meeting Narendra Modi, the Chancellor of Austria recalled a very old incident and said that the important thing between India and Austria is that both of us are concerned about the geopolitical situation of the world.

He recalled the past decades and said that when Austria was occupied by the four Allies: the US, England, France and the then Soviet Union in 1955 after the Second World War, then Prime Minister of India Jawaharlal Nehru played a key role in removing this occupation. He urged support for Austria in other international forums including the UN (then UNO). India said Austria should be recognised as an independent and neutral country so that it can come out of the conflicts created during the two world wars.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who arrived in Vienna, was given a red-carpet welcome at the airport followed by a guard-of-honour.
