Mumbai: With a new government coming to power in Britain, talks on a free trade agreement with India are likely to resume this month, government sources said. The talks between the two countries before the general elections in Britain and India were almost in the final stages and some issues remained to be resolved which are likely to be resolved now. In India, the previous government has been installed while in Britain the rulers have changed.
Talks are going on between the two countries regarding the trade agreement since January 2022. 13 meetings have been held so far. In a conversation with Prime Minister Narendra Modi last weekend, Britain's new Prime Minister Keir Starmer said that Britain is keen to finalize the agreement.
Indian industries want skilled professionals in sectors such as IT and healthcare in the UK, plus there is also zero customs duty in the UK on certain items.
Keir Starmer's Labour Party had promised a trade agreement with India in its election manifesto.
