Mumbai: Due to heavy rains in Mumbai from Sunday midnight to Monday morning, people faced problems due to waterlogging at various places including Hindmata, Milan Subway, Gandhi Market, Andheri Subway. On the other hand, all the claims of sewerage cleaning and rainwater drainage system failed. In many areas, water filled up to the knees and people had to walk on the dividers. On some roads, water came up to the bonnets of cars. Some people were daring to go out in two-wheelers or four-wheelers in the morning, but later they had to leave the vehicle on the road.
After the rain started in Mumbai on Sunday, Hindmata, Gandhi Market, Asalfa Last Bus Stop, Sable Nagar, Sheetal Lake, Nehru Nagar, Kurla Railway Station, Sudha Junction Kurla, Gauri Shankar Nagar, MG Rose Junction, Ghatkopar, Trimurti Society-Chunabhathi, Andheri Night Subway, Khar Subway, Milan Subway, Air India Colony, Akruti Mall in Andheri (East), Gulmohar Irla Junction, Netaji Palkar Road, Malvani Bus Depot, Sakinaka, Matunga, Mahalaxmi, Dadar, Mahim, Dharavi, Vidya Vihar, Chembur, Mulund, Dahinsar and other places were flooded. Since morning, the corporation teams were receiving messages of waterlogging in these places. The municipality has claimed to have installed hundreds of pumps across the city, but the waterlogging situation persisted even a few hours after the rain stopped.
Due to waterlogging on the roads, vehicular movement was also affected. If water accumulates, stop traffic anywhere in areas including Gandhi Market, Wadala Station, LBS Marg, Kurla Signal, Govandi Station, Shell Colony, Sangam Nagar, Kurla Vinoba Bhave Nagar, Sainath Subway Malad, Andheri Subway, Borivali (East) Andheri Market. Traffic had to be diverted. Vehicles were barely able to move at many places. Mumbai Traffic Police was constantly updating information through social media about which roads are closed and where to go from where.
To get rid of flooding in the Hindmata area near Parel, the municipality had experimented with building an underground tank to store water there. Last year, this benefited the area. However, the Hindmata area has been flooded twice this year. The rains also led to the Andheri subway being flooded and traffic had to be stopped. The metro has been shut down three times so far this monsoon.
